What it is, symptoms and how to restore visual comfort

Dry Eye

Dry eye, also known as dry eye syndrome or tear film dysfunction, is a very common condition characterized by insufficient tear production or excessively rapid evaporation of the tear film that protects the ocular surface. This imbalance causes irritation, redness, burning, and a general feeling of discomfort, often exacerbated by prolonged use of digital devices.

Dry eye can be episodic or chronic, and if not properly treated, it can impair daily comfort and quality of vision, especially in dry, windy, or air-conditioned environments.

Main symptoms

Symptoms can vary in intensity but often include:
• burning or foreign body sensation;
• redness and itching;
• fluctuating vision, which improves after blinking;
• paradoxical tearing (eye "watering" to protect itself);
• photophobia or discomfort with light;
• eye strain, especially when using a computer;
• difficulty wearing contact lenses for many hours.

These signs can worsen in the presence of blepharitis, allergies, hormonal changes, or particularly dry environments.

Most frequent causes

Dry eyes can be caused by multiple factors, often combined, of an ocular, environmental, or systemic nature.

Prolonged use of digital screens
Reduces blinking and promotes tear film evaporation.

Meibomian gland dysfunction
One of the most common causes: the lipid component is insufficient, and tears evaporate quickly.

Air-conditioned or dry environments
Air conditioning, heating, and wind compromise tear stability.

Prolonged contact lens wear
Can increase dryness and irritate the eye's surface.

Allergies and eye irritations
Make the tear film unstable and worsen symptoms.

• Hormonal changes and medications
Frequent during menopause, pregnancy, or certain therapies.

Age and systemic conditions
Aging and some diseases affect the quality and quantity of tears.

How is it managed

Managing dry eye requires a personalized and consistent approach, tailored to the specific causes.

Artificial tears and lubricating gels
They help temporarily replenish ocular hydration and improve visual comfort.

Daily eyelid hygiene
Essential, especially in cases associated with blepharitis or Meibomian gland dysfunction.

Warm compresses
They promote the liquefaction of eyelid secretions, improving the lipid component of the tear film.

Reduction of digital eye strain
Regular breaks, correct screen distance, proper posture, and balanced lighting are key elements.

Ophthalmic lenses or specific filters
Lenses with anti-reflective coatings or calibrated filters can reduce visual fatigue and improve vision stability.
